Format Content with Blocks
Learn how to add and format different types of content blocks in Notion, including text, headings, and lists.
This guide shows you how to add and format different types of content blocks in Notion. You'll learn to use the block menu to create headings, lists, and other content types that help organize your pages effectively.
Understanding Notion's Block System
Notion uses a block-based editing system where every piece of content is a separate block. This modular approach allows you to easily rearrange, format, and organize content. Each block can be a different type - text, heading, list, database, or any other content type.
Accessing the Block Menu
The quickest way to add formatted content is using the slash command. When you type /
on any line, Notion displays a menu of all available block types, making it easy to find and insert the content format you need.
Begin by clicking anywhere in the content area of your Notion page. This positions your cursor where you want to add new content blocks.
Type /
to open the block menu. This command reveals all available content block types including text, headings, lists, media, and advanced blocks. The menu appears as a dropdown with search functionality.
Click on Text to create a standard text block. This is the default block type in Notion and is perfect for regular paragraphs, body text, and general content.
When you need to create section headers or titles, click on Heading 1 from the block menu. Notion offers three heading levels (H1, H2, H3) for creating a clear document hierarchy.
For organizing information into bullet points, select Bulleted list from the menu. This creates a list where each item is preceded by a bullet point, perfect for features, steps, or key points.
Available Block Types
Understanding the different block types helps you choose the right format for your content:
- Text - Standard paragraphs and body content
- Headings - Create document structure with H1, H2, and H3 levels
- Bulleted List - Organize information with bullet points
- Numbered List - Create sequential steps or ranked items
- To-do List - Add checkboxes for task management
