Embed Page Preview
Learn how to add and format different types of content blocks in Notion, including text, headings, and lists.
Learn how to embed external content like websites, videos, and interactive tools directly into your Notion pages using the embed block. This feature allows you to create rich, interactive pages that pull content from external sources without requiring users to leave your Notion workspace.
When to Use Embeds
Embeds are ideal when you want to:
- Display live content from external websites without requiring users to navigate away from your page
- Include interactive tools like forms, surveys, or dashboards
- Integrate multimedia content such as videos, maps, or presentations
- Create comprehensive reference pages that combine your content with external resources
Understanding Embed vs Bookmark vs Link
Notion offers three ways to reference external content:
- Embed: Displays the external content directly within your page frame, allowing interaction without leaving Notion
- Bookmark: Creates a preview card with title, description, and thumbnail that links to the external site
- Inline Link: Simple text link that opens the external page in a new tab
How to Embed External Content
To embed external content into your Notion page, you'll use Notion's slash command system to access the embed block:
Click on an empty line or position where you want to insert the embedded content in your Notion page. The cursor will appear, ready for you to type.
Type /em
to open Notion's block insertion menu. This slash command will filter the available blocks to show embed-related options. You'll see a dropdown menu appear with various content blocks including Embed near the top of the list.
You can also type just /
to see all available blocks, then scroll down to find the Embed option.
Click on Embed from the dropdown menu. This will immediately insert an embed block into your page and open the URL input dialog.
In the URL input field that appears, type or paste the complete web address you want to embed. Make sure to include the full URL starting with https://
or http://
for proper embedding functionality.
Click the Embed link button to finalize the embed process. Notion will attempt to load and display the external content within an embedded frame on your page. The content will appear below your other page elements.
Supported Embed Types
Notion supports embedding from hundreds of services and websites. Some of the most commonly used types include:
- Video platforms: YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, and other video hosting services
- Design and collaboration tools: Figma, Miro, InVision, Canva designs
- Documents and presentations: Google Docs, Slides, PDFs, and presentation tools
- Interactive content: Google Forms, Typeform surveys, calendars, and scheduling tools
- Social media: Twitter/X posts, Instagram content, and other social platforms
- General websites: Most public websites that allow iframe embedding
Managing Embedded Content
Once you've embedded content, you can:
- Resize the embed by dragging the corners or edges of the embedded frame
- Edit the URL by clicking the three-dot menu on the embed block and selecting "Edit embed"
- Add a caption below the embed to provide context or description
- Move or delete the embed like any other Notion block using drag-and-drop or the block menu
Troubleshooting Embed Issues
Some websites restrict embedding for security reasons. If an embed doesn't work, the site may not allow iframe embedding, or you may need to use a bookmark instead.
Common issues and solutions:
- Embed shows error message: The website doesn't support iframe embedding. Try creating a bookmark instead.
- Content appears cut off: Resize the embed frame by dragging the edges to show more content.
- Slow loading: Complex embeds may take time to load depending on your internet connection and the external site's performance.
- Privacy concerns: Remember that embedded content loads directly from the external source and may track user interactions.
Best Practices for Embeds
- Test embed functionality before sharing pages with others to ensure content loads properly
- Use descriptive captions to provide context about what the embedded content contains
- Consider page loading speed when adding multiple embeds to a single page
- Keep backup links as bookmarks in case embed functionality changes or breaks
